DESCRIPTION:It’s time for another Girls Gone Nile weekend\, which offers us kayaking ladies the chance to improve our skills and push ourselves that little bit harder without the pressure of having the guys around while having an awesome time hanging out with each other. \nWe’ll spend Saturday surfing Superhole\, where we can work on our surfing and rolling skills in a more protected environment. You should have taken at least 3 lessons with KTN and have some basic rolling skills to come to Superhole. \nOn Sunday\, we’ll be doing a river run where we’ll be going down all the big stuff and spend some time at Nile Special at the end. For this you should have done at least one river run before. The ladies that aren’t good enough yet can organise a lesson with KTN on the Sunday. \nWe’ll be camping at the famous Land right by Superhole on Saturday night\, cook our own food and enjoy some drinks around the fire. \nAnyone not into kayaking\, or not quite good enough yet can join us for the social side and enjoy hanging out at the Land. \nIf you dont have your own camping gear\, see whether you can share a tent with someone or post on the MCU facebook page whether you can borrow the equipment. DESCRIPTION:The long awaited Hairy Lemon weekend is back. So get ready for the social highlight in MCU’s calendar with a Lemon Sports Pentathlon organised for Sunday.  \nFor the kayakers the Hairy Lemon weekend offers the great opportunity to explore a different part of the river and run some new rapids. Kayak the Nile will be offering discounted kayaking lessons for beginners to advanced kayakers. For more details and sign-up click here to sign-up. \nNon-kayakers are more than welcome to join – judging from last time there were definitely more people just enjoying a chilled out weekend than kayaking.\nAs the Hairy Lemon is an island\, it is vital that you book accommodation and please note that the usual shuttle service is not available for Hairy Lemon weekends. \nFor the Lemon Pentathlon\, we’ll get as many people as possible together\, divide them into random teams (great chance to make some new friends)\, and have them compete in the classic Lemon games like volleyball\, lemon twister\, frisbee golf\, viking chess\, etc. Teams will rotate and compete against one another for the highest score. There’ll be a big scoreboard\, points for the best dressed team\, a potential showdown between the runner-ups\, anything we can think of really. I’d be a good chance to get non-kayakers to the Lemon and people who would want to go on the water can still do so the two other days.  \nPlease email laurabierer@gmail.com if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Quarry Launch Party: 2nd Attempt!
DESCRIPTION:We are now REALLY ready to host the launch party for climbing the Quarry in Muyenga 🙂  \nThe Mountain Club Of Uganda has spent many hours cleaning the rock and setting up climbing routes for all members to enjoy 🙂\nAll the routes have been set up for top-rope climbing\, and routes are of various levels of difficulty\, to cater for all levels of ability. \nNon-MCU members and children are more than welcome to join the Quarry launch event. \nThere will be the opportunity to climb at the launch event\, whether you are an experienced climber or have never climbed before. We’ll have special climbing games for the kids or still behaving like one. There’ll also be a competition to name the routes.\nWear comfortable/sports clothes for the climbing and if you have bring a cycling or kayaking helmet in case any pebbles or small rocks come down the wall. \nIf climbing is not your thing\, there’ll be plenty of other outdoor games from Viking Chess\, Slackline to Badminton to keep you occupied. Feel free to bring your own lane games along. \nWe’ll also be providing a paid BBQ and a cash bar for when you need to refuel. If you have bring a picnic rug. \nWe’ll be heading over to Cafe Roma once it gets dark\, so come and join us for a few drinks there. \nDisclaimer: If it rains\, bad luck and we’ll have to cancel the event again. Climbing is an outdoor sport and is not safe on wet and slippy rock.

DESCRIPTION:Magic Mountainbiking \nOnly a 30-minute boatride away from busy Kampala lies a rather undiscovered area. A magical location without traffic\, fumes and hustler’s hassle. This area offers some of Uganda’s best mountainbike trails both singletrack and wider dirtroads which will lead you through lovely villages and beautiful nature. At the heart of it lies Weaver’s Nest. A place where you can really relax and enjoy the beauty of Uganda. In the weekend from May 5th to 7th Weaver’s Nest forms the base for the pilot of Red Dirt’s Mountainbike Festival. A festival designed for the bikefreak and his/her family. \nActivities \nWe will have scenic mountainbike rides for kids\, beginners and advanced during the day and an exciting ride at night. You can also join one of our mountainbike skill training or compete on the obstacle course. Besides biking there are plenty of other activities that you or your family can participate in: boatrides\, swimming pool\, cano\, bbq\, adventure park\, etc. Detailed information will follow soon. \nAccommodation \nWeaver’s Nest has two fully furnished houses with a great view available that each offers 10 sleeping places. SUMMARY:3 day Wilderness First Aid Course
DESCRIPTION:The course will run for 3 full days from Saturday 18th February till Monday 20th February in Jinja. \nThe 3 day course includes Basic CPR and First Aid\, assessment\, trauma and medical emergencies\, Uganda specific emergency transport ideas\, and an overview of African illnesses. \nMCU members who wanted to take one of these courses will become certified through ECSI. This 2 year certification is an internationally recognised qualification. The card is digital which means no waiting on Ugandan post and you have your certification within days. \nIn the US\, first aid courses with CPR cost around $80-$100 per person and Wilderness First Aid courses $200-$300 per person. \nTo make the cost easy we have a standard price of $50/ person\, plus $15 for the online book. \nThe price is payable on the first day of the course. This is based on minimum uptake requirements of $500 (so 10 people). Supposing there are less people attending a course than the minimum\, the price per person adjusts to reach the minimum uptake. For example 5 people wanting to do the 3 day Wilderness first aid would need to pay $100/ person for the course to go ahead. Enrollment beyond the minimum uptake is an additional $50 per person. \nHaley Buffman is an Emergency Care and Safety Institute (ECSI) and American Heart Association (AHA) Instructor. She has held a Wilderness EMT-B certification since 2004. She also has 10 years of guiding experience\, 6 years of teaching experience\, and can tailor the course towards the Ugandan perspective on emergency medical response. DESCRIPTION:The AGM is the one opportunity to make changes to the club constitution\, membership fees\, directors and committee members\, etc.  All members are invited to suggest or propose changes to the Club.  The AGM is the formal setting where such changes can be voted up or down.  Members wishing to make suggestions are always free to do so.  If you would like to make a suggestion you can send an email to info@mcu.ug. We look forward to your ideas and to further improving our club in 2017. \nAll the committee positions are up for vote! This is your chance to contribute to the MCU. We have put together a briefing HERE to show you what the roles are and the basic responsibilities. This can vary and people take on different responsibilities based on personal interest. \nA lot has happened this year and the MCU is now legally registered. We will be voting on the proposed changes to the Memorandum and Articles. A lot of time and effort has gone into reviewing the old Constitution. Please look at the draft document that would replace the old constitution HERE. \nThe AGM will be held in our normal spot at Athina Club on Windsor Crescent in Kololo from 7:30pm.

SUMMARY:Mpanga Forest Halloween Camping
DESCRIPTION:UPCOMING TRIP FOR ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE (Saturday 29th October to Sunday 30th October)!!… with an eerie twist…… \nAn affordable weekend of camping\, options to walk/run through a serene forest combined with some Halloween festivities?…. Sounds fun? Then read on…… \nWe are planning a MCU trip for a night in the beautiful Mpanga Forest\, with a fancy dress Halloween BBQ planned under the spooky forest canopy on the Saturday night….. \nMpanga Forest Reserve is about 1 hour west of Kampala\, near Mpigi town\, along the Masaka Road. Mpanga is recorded to have over 500 tree species and shrubs\, with some trees estimated to be 100-years old. There are over 200 bird species recorded in this reserve. The common birds to watch include\, hornbill\, spotted greenbul\, black and white casqued\, African pied hornbills\, Uganda woodland warbler\, great blue turaco and the ross turaco. Mammals found in Mpanga include; bushbuck\, red-tailed monkey and flying squirrels. Several butterfly species can also be observed throughout the reserve. \nWalking and running trails of various lengths can be enjoyed throughout the forest\, and on the Saturday night\, a fancy dress Halloween BBQ party will be organised in the spooky forest…. (don’t forget your fancy dress costume!) \nThe trip will run from Saturday 29th October to Sunday 30th October\, which gives ample time to explore the tranquil forest and surrounds. \nAccommodation and costs:  \nWe will stay at the basic\, but serene\, Mpanga Eco-Tourism Centre camp. As part of the MCU\, we have been fortunate to be able to negotiate some great rates\, and for a total of just UGX50k per person\, you will enjoy: \n\nEntrance fee to the forest\nCamping (bring your own tent)\nForest walk (short\, or long- as you wish)\nSaturday or Sunday lunch (local meal)\nEntry to Halloween BBQ party (please bring own meat/ vegetables to throw on the BBQ).\nSunday breakfast.\n\nThere are also options to upgrade to a dorm bed\, or a twin banda (for UGX10-20k per person\, depending on accommodation choice) \nCold showers are available\, and there are eco-friendly toilets. DESCRIPTION:Legend has it that Kampala\, like Rome\, is a city that was built on seven hills. The city derives its name Kampala for the Luganda work “Kasozi ka Mpala” which means a Hill of many Impala. The Kampala of today comprises of 21 hills\, but a walk through the 7 Hills will give you the opportunity to explore the genesis of the present day city. \nThe 7 hills are; Nsambya\, Kibuli\, Nakasero\, Old Kampala\, Namirembe\, Lubaga\, Lubiri. A route between the hills along paths and feeder road takes approx 6 hours.  The walk will be led by Deo Lubega (0712890369). The start and finish point will be the Moonland Gardens on Nsambya-Gaba Road (a safe place to park with a small charge).
