Newsletter – February 2020

Hey there MCU Members!

Wishing you all a happy new year! 2020 is off to a good start with some great events planned and our Annual General Election coming up on February 6th. It’s an exciting time for the club and we hope to see you all soon!

MCU Annual General Meeting & Elections

Feb 6th: MCU Club Governance and Annual General Meeting (AGM)
Join us for MCU‘s Annual Meeting on Feb 6, 6:30-9 pm @ the Athina Club House (directions are here). At this meeting you’ll get to see what the club has been up to over the past year. You’ll also help us vote in the new MCU committee. If you’ve been wanting to get more involved with MCU, being on the committee is a great chance to do just that! No experience required, just an enthusiastic and adventurous spirit! If you are leaving mid-year, don’t let that dissuade you from running. We’d still love to have you on the committee! For more info on the committee positions check our Get Involved page http://mcu.ug/get-involved/.

In case you missed them, we’ll show the winners and runners up from our Photo Competition. And we’ll be running trivia throughout the night. The trivia winner will take home a prize! Note that only members can vote and participate in the trivia, but anyone can come to the meeting! If you’re not yet a member, you can sign up here. See you there!! If you can’t attend, don’t despair, you can appoint another member to proxy vote for you, by sending an email to info@mcu.ug. Please note a member can only vote for one other member as a proxy.

Committee positions elections
The MCU committee runs the day-to-day running of the club and meets on a monthly basis to make decisions concerning the club’s management and then implements them. The committee is a great way to get more involved in the club and ensure a successful year for MCU.

Below is a list of the committee positions up for election. Some of the committee are intending to stand down, however we encourage members to stand even for positions with the incumbent intending to run again. Feel free to get into contact with any of the committee members, if you would like to know more about the committee in general or positions in specific.

  • Chair (Colleen O’Donnell currently holds this position)
  • Vice-Chair (Kiwanda Emmanue)
  • Treasurer (Laura B currently holds this position and is intending to stand down)
  • Secretary (Christin currently holds this position and is intending to stand down)
  • Trip-Coordinator (Lorna currently holds this position and is intending to stand down)
  • Communications & Archives (Andie Procopio)
  • Climbing Coordinator (currently held by Hugo Hotte and Zach Leavitt)
  • Open Committee: (currently held by Liz Kamugisha, Charles Dimitri, and Dave Moore)
  • Advisory Board: (Deo Lubega, Jenny Farmer, Nabil Alam, Pierre Gay Perret)
  • Kayaking Coordinator: up for grabs!

Note 1:  The kayaking coordinator position is also up for grabs and this is an appointed position with some awesome benefits! However, as kayaking coordinator you can stand for another committee position as well.

Note 2: Please be aware that the above is only an indication of whether an incumbent committee will stand down from the position.

The elections will be done in the order shown above. If you stand for Chair, but do not get elected, you then have the chance to stand for Vice-Chair or any other position. So no reason not to aim high!

Climbing Updates:

The quarry is closed for now, but we’re almost (about 3 weeks away) done cleaning and bolting the new Bukasa Wall that is basically adjacent from the quarry. It will have 30m high route.

MCU is soon to begin construction on a bouldering wall in the back of Caffe Roma. There will be 3 walls with a roof overhead and a total of 56 sq meters of climbable area, available anytime to MCU members. MCU members will also be able to enjoy a 10% discount (might need to confirm this) on food and beverages, including bottled  Banange beer. To get the bouldering wall up and going however, we will need help from the MCU community, namely acquiring climbing holds, which are not readily available in UG. If anyone is going to their home country and returning, it’d be greatly appreciated if they can bring back even a small number of holds. Some of their local climbing gyms might even be able to donate some of their used holds. We also need large gym mats if anyone has a connection to those in Kampala.

2020 public holidays: (AKA perfect dates for a trip! Many of them are long weekends so get planning!)
10-13th April (Easter)// 1 May (Friday)// 3 Jun3 (Wed)// 9 June (Tue)// 31 July (Fri)// 9 Oct (Fri)

Have a brilliant trip idea?
Whether it’s hiking, climbing, cycling, or exploring the great outdoors of Uganda, email info@mcu.ug and we will help you plan!

Cheers,
Christin Weigt
MCU Secretary

MCU is always looking for members to get involved, help with organising trips and for suggestions of new trip ideas! The Mountain Club of Uganda has been in existence discontinuously since 1945. Recently though there has been an increased interest in mountaineering in Uganda, which led to the Club’s revival in early 2012. Since then the Club has gone from strength to strength. The Club aims to serve as a platform for budding and experienced mountaineers to meet, as well as to promote the sport of mountaineering in Uganda.
