Nsiita/Luwazi is just 40km, roughly a 1-1.5 hour drive, from Kampala. MCU has worked with the Nsiita Hill Environmental Protection Committee to allow access to MCU climbers at no charge. At the crag you’ll find several top rope and sport routes ranging from beginner to advanced skill levels. The rock offers little protection against sun and rain, so be sure to prepare for the elements with proper sun and rain protection and lots of water. Climbers are encouraged to support the community when possible, so consider purchasing your water from a local vender at Nsiita.
Fun fact! Lwazi means “rock” in Luganda. 🙂 Photo credit: Vincent Kienzler
Access:
The Luwazi crag is a 5 minute hike southward off the dirt road. Parking is available at a private residence north of the rock for a small fee (5,000 UGX).
Driving Directions:
Take the road to Kalagi via Gayaza. Just after the round-about in Kalagi make a left onto a dirt road (Nakanyoyi Rd) toward Kijjo Umea Primary School. Continue 1.2 km, then take a left at the sign for the Nakanyonyi Day and Boarding School. Continue 2.7 km, then turn left. Continue 1.1 km until you reach a house with blue facade. This is where you can park. On foot, follow the path behind the house which leads to the top of the cliff and climb away!
GPS coordinates for parking: N 0.53998, E 32.72744. Beware—Google might try to route you down some impassable roads, so stick to the instructions above!
